Dark ADSL
SmarttNet Dark/Naked ADSL
Dark ADSL, also known as naked ADSL, is an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) connection without a PSTN (analogue telephony) service or the associated dial tone. In a nutshell, it offers ADSL Internet without asking a customer to pay for a land line. SmarttNet’s Dark ADSL services don’t require signing up for a service bundle or lengthy contract.
How does it work?
With regular ADSL, a wire is run from the telephone to a Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) splitter which separates the DSL and voice bands. A wire carrying both services then continues to the customer, delivering both voice and data to a telephone jack. In naked ADSL systems, part of the cable from the switch to the splitter is removed, therefore dropping the dial tone from the line and rendering it unnecessary. As a result, users get high-speed connections without needing a voice line.
Who can benefit from Dark ADSL?
Anyone who wants to use cellular service or VOIP exclusively in the place of a traditional landline will benefit from the cost savings of Dark ADSL.
Are there any extra fees?
Just the local tariff regulated by the CRTC. The tariff is based on your location and is between $4-$10 in Vancouver – quite a bargain compared to the $45 or more to have a traditional telephone line.
